Troy Parent Information Night

Troy Parent Information Night Thursday May 17th:
6:00-6:40 Incoming 5th grade presentation
6:50-7:10 Social Media for Parents – Jamie Vanek Asst. Principal Learwood
7:20-8:00 Incoming 6th grade presentation.

All are held in the gym. This will be a parent geared presentation. We will talk Troy logistics, team information, curriculum, and PTA involvement. The Social Media for Parents is for any family that would like to hear about protecting our kids as they navigate through the cyber world. I will post the slides on our website and have a link through my blog. If you are familiar with Troy, there will not be a lot of new info. During the 5th grade meeting, we will share more about Band/Orchestra and the 6th grade Math Department will share about their curriculum in addition to the general information. Parking will be at a premium so we ask that 5th grade families leave promptly at the end of their presentation(s) and 6th grade do not arrive too early.

Safety Message for Avon Lake School Families and Staff

THIS MESSAGE IS BEING BROUGHT TO YOU ON BEHALF OF ROBERT SCOTT, SUPERINTENDENT, AVON LAKE CITY SCHOOLS

The Avon Lake City School District holds the safety of students and staff as its top priority. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by yesterday’s senseless tragedy in Parkland, Florida. As we learn more about the incident at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, we naturally think about our preparedness if such an event ever happened here in Avon Lake.

Avon Lake Schools regularly reviews and practices our safety plans, always preparing for events that we pray will never happen. We are grateful for our close relationship with the Avon Lake Police Department as first responders for their guidance and support in these efforts.

Our diligence in creating a school community of trust provides avenues of communication for our students. We develop trusting relationships with our students so they feel comfortable talking to an adult when they have concerns for themselves or others.

Parents, please remind your children that if they have any information about potential threats to school safety, they should report their concerns to a school employee immediately. Their concern will then be investigated thoroughly.

While we can do everything possible to protect our children, many will be watching the news and talking with friends regarding the violence in Florida. Below is a link to an article from The National Association of School Psychologists that provides concrete tips for talking to your child about violence in school and some warning signs to look for if your child is struggling with fears.

Thank you for your continued support of Avon Lake City Schools. Together, we can best ensure that Avon Lake City Schools will maintain a safe environment, allowing us to focus on our students’ success.
